How to Hang Your Wall Art in 5 Easy Steps

Wall art decorations are the perfect addition to brighten up the mood of any interior. Those hanging pieces of art create the perfect illusion to fill in the dull and empty space. Finding the perfect wall decor to match your home is not as easy as it sounds, and arranging your ideal piece on the wall can be a daunting task.

Some people hire interior designers to decorate their homes, making it easier for them to have stunning wall decor. But for those select few who prefer the DIY style (or those who simply can’t afford such designers), organizing the wall art to have that balanced and eye-catching vibe is a lot of work.

If you have no idea where to begin and no clue as to how you’ll display your wall art, then you’re in luck! Hold onto your art and we’ll let you in on effective hacks to exhibit the best of your wall decor - read on to learn more.

DEFINE YOUR WALL

Hanging your wall art decor is not simply about finding the sweetest spot in the room and hammering away with nails and screws. So before you fixate the canvas sign permanently, the first thing you have to consider is the type of surface it is built on.

WOODEN PANELS

Most home interiors have wood panels as wall surfaces, which is perfect for hanging wall art decorations! It may be a traditional approach, but hammer and nails work great on these types of surfaces. You can either use picture hangers or directly secure your preferred canvas with just screws and nails.

CONCRETE AND MASONRY

Some walls are made of concrete blocks and bricks so you have to be careful about hammering the nails on the surface. The best tool to use in this scenario are screws and lead wall plugs. Drill a hole in the wall, fit the wall plug, secure the wall art with the right screw, and let it hang.

PLAN THE FURNITURE

Oftentimes, there will be furniture present in the room even before you decide to hang a canvas decor on the wall surface. It is best practice to consider decor pieces that span about two-thirds of the width of the furniture below it and 8 to 10 inches above it. The most common area for hanging centerpiece wall art is above the fireplace, the sofa, and the staircase.

FIREPLACE

When hanging above the fireplace, you must make sure that the canvas sign must be at least two-thirds of its size. The perfect place for the decor above the fireplace is about 10 to 30 cm above the mantelpiece.

SOFA & HEADBOARDS

The living room and the bedroom are the go-to places for hanging wall art canvases, and these decorations are usually displayed above the sofa and headboards. Hence, it is ideal for the art to be at least two-thirds of the size of the furniture. The bottom part of the wall sign must sit at about 15 to 20 cm above the sofa and/or headboard.

TABLE & DESKS

Hanging wall decors are also frequent above dining tables, kitchen bars, dressers, and desks. In these cases, the sign should be visually connected to the furniture below it, and not floating too high above it. The optimal spacing between the bottom of the wall art and the furniture is about 20 to 26 cm.

STAIRCASE

As for wall canvas decorations that are hanging on the staircase, measure 145 cm from the floor and another 145 cm from every third step to create a balanced diagonal formation.

CREATE A LAYOUT

Once you figure out what kind of wall surface you’ll be hanging your art on, the next step would be to spare a second thought in arranging the canvas wall art with the perfect visual balance.

For best viewing, the center of your chosen wall canvas must be displayed at eye level - which is about 57 to 60 inches off the ground on average. Also, consider the height of the room from floor to ceiling. There are spaces with a low ceiling so eye level should also be on the down lows.

It is also nice to consider the activity of the room, take the living room and the dining room as an example where people usually sit. The eye-level in these areas of the house aren’t as high as when people are standing up.

SYMMETRICAL

Create a visual balance of art pieces by arranging your decor in a symmetrical and well-balanced manner. Although traditional, it still has its merits especially if you’re looking for order and perfection.

ASYMMETRICAL

If you have canvas wall art that varies in size and style, then you can go for an asymmetrical approach. This unique arrangement tactic is perfect for large wall signs as it allows you to mix and match different designs! Although it’s a bit difficult to maintain and achieve visual balance, asymmetrical placement still has its eclectic appeal because it opens the window of creativity.

When faced with complex designs that have varying sizes, the easiest trick in the book is to lay it out on the floor or cut out pieces of paper and stick them on the wall. A simple sketch will do or you can also drag it around the floor until you get the visualization you need before installing it on the walls.

MEASURE THINGS

When you determine the kind of surface and the visual layout of your canvas wall art, it’s about time to measure the amount of space that you’ll need. Do you need the entire large wall? Or will it be better to decorate smaller wall areas?

LARGE WALLS

Expansive wall surfaces will need to be filled with lots of decorative arts or really large masterpieces. Small canvas decors will appear isolated and lost when displayed on a vast surface. The best tactic to deal with large walls is to go big with a sizable canvas wall sign. Another great option is to create a gallery wall consisting of multiple small pieces that are spread out and arranged neatly.

SMALLER WALLS

On the other hand, small surfaces like in between doors and windows do not need large canvases - you don’t want your wall decor to look overbearing and excessive, right? Find the balance of design and size in petite pieces of art. You can also embrace a more contemporary approach and create an inspiring wall of the gallery with various small canvas masterpieces.

It is imperative to maintain a balance in the arrangement of artworks by drawing an invisible line in the middle of the wall surface. Be careful not to put too much on either side to achieve visual balance. A good practice is to start with the most prominent and largest decor at the center to create a focal point. Smaller pieces are arranged outwards.

Another point to consider is the spacing in between the wall canvases. The easiest tactic is to use the palm of your hand, whether closed or stretched, as spacing in between decors. You can also try the grid layout leaving 3 to 4 inches in-between frames or the triptych layout that leaves 4 to 6 inches of space.

To achieve aesthetic appeal, the middle of your wall decor should be approximately 145 cm from the floor. Mark it with a pencil before fixating your chosen art on the wall for easier installation.

Remember, every art is a visual representation of yourself and your home. It creates and highlights the ambiance of your space, and with these tips, you can get the best of hanging your wall art!
